Mississippi Woman files Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Lawsuit

In Mississippi, another woman has come forward to pursue compensation from Johnson & Johnson after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer allegedly caused by near-daily use of their talcum powder products for feminine hygiene purposes.
Ada Rich-Williams filed her talcum powder lawsuit on July 1 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. Here, she claims that she used Johnson & Johnson talc products including Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for genital hygiene nearly every day for roughly 20 years, and that this exposure to talcum powder was the cause of her diagnosis with ovarian cancer in March 2008. She goes on to claim that J&J knowingly released a potentially dangerous product into the market and that they willfully withheld warnings about the possible link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer from consumers.
Like a growing number of women who now attribute their gynecologic cancer to use of talcum powder, Rich-Williams claims that J&J knew for a number of decades—longer than she had been using their products, even—that genital application of talcum powder had been associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer. So why, she asks, did she and millions of women just learn about this potential risk? She claims that if she had known that dusting talcum powder on her undergarments, sanitary napkins, and genital area may increase her risk of developing this potentially fatal form of cancer she never would have used J&J products for these purposes.
Rich-Williams also claims that J&J had been warned years ago that cornstarch was a safe and effective alternative ingredient to talc in their body powder products, but that they chose not to make this substitution. Her lawsuit states, “At all pertinent times, a feasible alternative to the Products has existed. For example, cornstarch is an organic carbohydrate that is quickly broken down by the body with no known health effects. Cornstarch powders have been sold and marketed for the same uses as the Products with nearly the same effectiveness.”
In another recent talcum powder cancer lawsuit against J&J, a plaintiff calls into evidence a letter sent by the Cancer Prevention Coalition to J&J and other manufacturers of talc products in 1994, in which the companies are specifically warned of the risk of talcum powder ovarian cancer and encouraged to use cornstarch to replace talc in their products. In his lawsuit filed after his wife died of uterine cancer possibly linked to use of talcum powder products, Tod Alan Musgrove states that in this letter to J&J CEO Ralph Larson, the Cancer Prevention Coalition “cited a recent study by Dr. Bernard Harlow from Harvard Medical School confirming this fact and quoted a portion of the study where Dr. Harlow and his colleagues discouraged the use of talc in the female genital area. The letter further stated that 14,000 women per year die from ovarian cancer and that this type of cancer is very difficult to detect and has a low survival rate. The letter concluded by requesting that Johnson & Johnson withdraw talc products from the market because of the alternative of cornstarch powders, or at a minimum, place warning information on its talc-based body powders about [the] ovarian cancer risk they pose.”
While some industries including the condom industry made the switch from talc to cornstarch after receiving this information from the Cancer Prevention Coalition, J&J, it appears, willfully ignored these warnings and continued to not only use talc for their body powder products but also to promote them for applications believed to be unsafe.
