Man files Talcum Powder Lawsuit after Wife dies of Ovarian Cancer at 48

A man recently filed a talcum powder wrongful death lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson and a number of other entities after losing his wife to ovarian cancer when she was only 48 years old.
According to his talcum powder cancer lawsuit, Patrick Barker’s wife, Carla, used talcum powder products like Johnson’s Baby Powder for feminine hygiene purposes on a regular basis for most of her life. Barker alleges that though J&J and other defendants, including talc supplier Imerys Talc America and the Personal Care Products Council, knew or should have known that genital application of talc may increase the risk of ovarian cancer, but that they failed to warn of this risk. This willful and intentional failure to warn, Barker claims, directly resulted in his wife’s diagnosis with ovarian cancer and her death at the age of 48 in March 2015.
Talcum powder products like Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower have long been marketed to women with claims that sprinkling these powders on undergarments, sanitary napkins, and directly onto the genitals will help women to maintain “personal freshness” and eliminate odor. Many women grew up with mothers and even grandmothers who had always used talcum powder products for feminine hygiene, so it felt normal and healthy for them to do so as well.
Sadly, women all over are now learning that J&J and other talc product manufacturers had been warned decades ago that genital application of talc may significantly increase a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer. One of the first pieces of research linking talcum powder to ovarian cancer is a study published in 1971 where researchers noted that they identified talc particles in roughly 75% of ovarian cancer tumors they dissected. Since then, more than 20 epidemiological studies have found an association between talcum powder and ovarian cancer and other gynecologic cancers. Despite this evidence, J&J and other companies willfully withheld warnings about the possible link between cancer and talcum powder—and they continued to advertise talc body powders specifically for feminine hygiene purposes.
Like a growing number of plaintiffs demanding justice after suffering personal injury or the loss of a loved one to ovarian cancer believed to be caused by talcum powder, Mr. Barker alleges that J&J and other defendants neglected their duty to consumers through their failure to warn of known risks. He states in his lawsuit, “The Defendants had a duty to know and warn about the hazards associated with the use of J&J Baby Powder. The Defendants failed to inform its customers and warn users of J&J Baby Powder of a known catastrophic health hazard associated with the use of its products. In addition, the Defendants procured and disseminated false, misleading and biased information regarding the safety of J&J Baby Powder to the public and used influence over governmental and regulatory bodies regarding talc.”
In addition to the evidence through internal company memos that J&J intentionally failed to disclose the possible link between talc and ovarian cancer, many have been shocked to learn that the company also offered the first plaintiff in a talc cancer lawsuit more than $1 million to settle her claim and stay quiet. This woman declined the settlement and spread the word about talcum powder cancer risks, and her courage has helped educate other people about the issue. Now, just this year, two plaintiffs have been awarded multi-million dollar verdicts in talcum powder cancer lawsuits against J&J and other defendants.
