Bloomberg reveals J&J Knew About Talcum Powder Cancer Risks as Early as 1971

In light of a recent increase of media attention about possible links between genital use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer as well as a growing number of talcum powder cancer lawsuits, some lifetime users of talc products may wonder whether the knowledge of talc cancer is new. Sadly, it is not. Recently, a special report published by a leading trustworthy news source revealed that Johnson & Johnson, a major player in the cosmetic talc industry, likely knew about the link between their products and cancer as early as 1971.
On March 31, Bloomberg Businessweek published a special report on recent talcum powder cancer lawsuits, specifically lawsuits against J&J. According to this report, J&J and their talc supplier, Imerys Talc America, are currently named as defendants in more than 1,000 talcum powder cancer lawsuits, with the next trial to begin this week in St. Louis.
Johnson & Johnson introduced Baby Powder, nearly 100% talc, in 1894 to help prevent diaper rash caused by excess moisture. In the early 1900s, the company sought to expand their baby powder profits by inducing women to use the product for their own personal hygiene, including sprinkling it on their underwear. This worked well for them: in 2014 alone, J&J sold roughly $374 million in talcum powder products. Many women have grown up believing baby powder was essential to any good personal hygiene routine, and this has been a trusted product for generations. Now, women are dismayed to learn that J&J was warned about the potential link between vaginal use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer as early as 1971.
It was in 1971 that British researchers identified talc in 75% of the ovarian cancer tumors they dissected. Little more than a decade later, a study published in the journal Cancer in 1982 found that women who used talcum powder on their genitals and undergarments were three times more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. J&J stated that this science was unreliable at the time and that there was “no tendency of pure cosmetic-grade talc to cause cancer.” Since then, many more studies have shown a direct correlation between use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer.
So why didn’t J&J warn users of this risk? Moreover, why did J&J continue to market their baby powder and talcum powder products directly to women for personal hygiene uses? Most plaintiffs believe this was an act of gross negligence in their duty to protect consumers, which they seem to have valued far less than the considerable profits they make from talc.
The evidence that talcum powder causes ovarian cancer has been scientifically discussed for decades, but it is only recently that talcum powder lawsuits and media coverage of the issue have brought it to public attention. This new focus on the known risk of ovarian cancer linked to talc is likely to spur even more talcum powder cancer lawsuits against J&J and other manufacturers.
