“The Big Lie”: J&J’s Campaign to Hide Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer Risk

Two substantial recent settlements have brought the issue of talcum powder ovarian cancer into the spotlight, educating the public about the potentially fatal link between genital use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer. While millions of women who have used talc products such as baby powder for personal hygiene for their entire lives may be shocked to learn of this association, they will be even more shocked to learn that Johnson & Johnson, a trusted company and the leading manufacturer of talcum powder products in the United States, has willfully hidden the known association between talc and ovarian cancer for decades.
A recent article in the Huffington Post has brought to public attention some of the evidence used by attorneys for multiple plaintiffs to convince juries that J&J has not only failed to warn of the known risk of talcum powder cancer, but that they even manipulated data submitted to the government in an attempt to hide this risk and protect their own profits. Here, the campaign J&J embarked upon to conceal the link between talc and ovarian cancer is referred to as “the big lie”.
According to this article, “Johnson & Johnson and its cosmetics lobby have known about the link between its talcum powder and cancer for 40 years, distorted research about the talcum-cancer connection, and lied to the public about the dangers.”
What makes this revelation especially tragic is that, if J&J and other talc industry big-shots had their way, the public may still not be aware of the risk of talcum powder ovarian cancer. In fact, it is through the courage of plaintiffs who sought to expose these manufacturers’ negligence that the extent to which J&J and others went to hide talcum powder cancer risks is now coming to light.
So far in 2016, two talcum powder cancer lawsuits against J&J have ended in multi-million dollar settlements. In February, the family of a woman named Jacqueline Fox was awarded $72 million after jury decided that J&J’s failure to warn of talc side effects directly contributed to her death from ovarian cancer in 2013. In May, Gloria Ritesund was awarded $55 million when a jury concluded that J&J willfully withheld their knowledge of the link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder from her and other consumers.
Due to the massive amounts of these settlements, talcum powder cancer lawsuits have garnered substantial media attention, which may help to educate women about the risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder use. Also as a result of the media frenzy surrounding these lawsuits, the lengths to which J&J went to hide this risk have also been exposed.
According to the attorneys in these recent talc lawsuits, J&J could have known as early as 1971 that talc used for feminine hygiene purposes may substantially increase the risk of ovarian cancer. They certainly were aware of this risk by 1982, when Dr. Daniel Cramer of Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston published a study finding that women who use talc in the genital area are up to 92% more likely to be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At this time, Dr. Cramer also suggested that J&J had long known of the link between ovarian cancer and their products such as Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower—which they specifically marketed for feminine hygiene purposes.
While J&J knew or should have known that their talc products may cause cancer as early as the 1970s, it might not have been until the 1990s that they actively sought to hide this danger from the public and from the government. In 1993, the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP) made the statement that there was “clear evidence of carcinogenic activity” associated with all forms of cosmetic talc. In response to this, the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association, of which J&J is a primary contributor, formed the Talc Interested Party Task Force (TIPTF), which was created to “pool financial resources” of the talc industry to defend against regulation such as the requirement to warn of talc risks. Given that telling the public that talc may cause ovarian cancer would substantially impact these companies’ profits, it behooved them at this time to invest in downplaying the link between talc and cancer.
As evidence of J&J’s negligence, attorneys in the recent talc lawsuits presented evidence that the TIPTF carefully selected and handsomely compensated scientists who would present biased research to downplay the link between cosmetic talc and ovarian cancer. It was also alleged that the TIPTF edited these scientific reports before they were submitted to federal agencies, and that the group “released false information about the safety of talc to consumers, and used political and economic influence on regulatory bodies throughout the 1990s.”
It was not until the company that provides J&J’s talc, Imerys Talc, was prompted by statements by the Canadian government in 2006 that talc is “very toxic” and “cancer causing” that they began to warn their customers about talc risks. Still, however, J&J chose not to repeat this warning to their own customers, the millions of women using their talc products for feminine hygiene daily.
Thanks to the evidence presented in these recent lawsuits, the campaign of deception in which J&J and other talc product manufacturers engaged for decades is now public knowledge.
