Study Shows Ovarian Cancer Risk 33% higher in Women who use Talcum Powder Regularly

Last month, a jury awarded $72 million to a family who claimed their mother died from ovarian cancer after using talcum powder for personal hygiene for more than 35 years. Though Johnson & Johnson, a leading manufacturer of talcum powder and baby powder products, has continued to attempt to impress upon the public that their products in no way increase a woman’s risk of developing cancer, a recent study provides evidence to the contrary and adds to a growing body of evidence linking talc to ovarian cancer.
The study was published in the journal Epidemiology and conducted by a team led by Dr. Daniel W. Cramer, head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Epidemiology Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. In this study, Dr. Cramer and his team evaluated more than 4,000 women, roughly one half of whom had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and one half of whom had no ovarian cancer diagnosis. They found that the women who admitted to routinely using talcum powder for feminine hygiene purposes (applying it to their underwear, tampons, and genitals), the risk of developing ovarian cancer was 33% higher.
Dr. Cramer has been vocal about the link between ovarian cancer and talc for decades. Reuters reports that he first warned of this association in 1982 and has testified as a paid expert in multiple talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits. When asked why the results of this most recent study may seem to contradict results of previous studies which did not find an association between talc and ovarian cancer, he said that this is the first study to focus on premenopausal women and postmenopausal women who had used hormone therapy.
For their part, Johnson & Johnson recently made a statement regarding the safety of talcum powder, “With over 100 years of use, few ingredients have the same demonstrated performance, mildness and safety profile as cosmetic talc.” Despite Johnson & Johnson’s assertions that talcum powder is safe, the World Health Organization stated in 2006 that talc is possibly carcinogenic and a growing number of women are now claiming in lawsuits that talcum powder led to their diagnosis with ovarian cancer.
Dr. Cramer, however, hopes that this most recent study will help prove what he believes is a clear association between talc and cancer and may prevent future diagnoses in women. “This is an easily modified risk factor,” he told Reuters Health by phone. “Talc is a good drying agent, but women should know that if it’s used repeatedly, it can get into the vagina and into their upper genital tract. And I think if they knew that, they wouldn’t use it.”
Dr. Nicolas Wentzensen, head of clinical epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute, says that though this recent study may help to warn some women of the potential risk of talcum powder cancer, further research is needed to solidify the theory. “Scientific consensus emerges over time, especially in cases like this, where the results have been somewhat inconsistent,” he said. “While this recent analysis provides additional evidence supporting an association of talc and ovarian cancer, it will be important to test the methods used in this analysis in other data to see if the findings are confirmed.”
Although further research may be needed to truly confirm the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer, studies like this one published in Epidemiology may help to warn women that a product used for generations may not be as safe as they believed.
