Man Blames J&J, Talcum Powder for Wife’s Death from Ovarian Cancer

As media coverage of the growing number of talcum powder cancer lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson continues, it may be easy for some to lose perspective and begin to view these lawsuits as mere news stories rather than accounts of severe suffering and often tragic loss. To each plaintiff in a talcum powder cancer lawsuit, however, the dismay and anger they feel when they learn that a product they trusted for most of their lives may have caused their suffering—and that the maker of this product allegedly knew of this risk and didn’t warn them—can be devastating.
In one of the most recently filed talcum powder lawsuits, a man named Sebastian Ferman laments the wrongful death of his wife and demands that Johnson & Johnson, Imerys Talc America, and other defendants be held accountable for their negligence in allowing her to be exposed to their allegedly dangerous products.
Mr. Ferman says that his wife, Carol Ferman, routinely used J&J talc products like Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for feminine hygiene purposes, dusting the powder on her perineal region or undergarments as was suggested by advertisements. Like other plaintiffs in talc cancer lawsuits, Ferman alleges that his wife would not have used these products near her genital area had she known this may significantly increase her risk of developing ovarian cancer. Ferman also alleges that J&J and the other defendants knew for decades of the research associating their talc products with ovarian cancer, yet they intentionally withheld warnings of this risk from consumers.
According to Mr. Ferman, “[S]ince approximately 1982, there have been approximately twenty-two (22) additional epidemiologic studies providing data regarding the association of talc and ovarian cancer. Nearly all of these studies have reported an elevated risk for ovarian cancer associated with genital talc use in women.”
It is as a direct result of the actions and negligence of J&J, Imerys Talc America, and other defendants, says Ferman, that his wife never knew she was putting herself at risk for a fatal diagnosis. Carol Ferman was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2000, and died from that disease a little more than one year later, on February 19, 2001.
Mr. Ferman is certainly not alone in his claims against J&J regarding their failure to warn of talcum powder cancer risks. In fact, so many plaintiffs have filed talcum powder lawsuits that a large number of these claims were centralized before a single New Jersey court for coordinated pretrial proceedings. Each of these claims represents tremendous suffering caused by a diagnosis with a severe disease, grueling treatments, shortened life expectancy, and often, the tragic loss of a loved one. For such plaintiffs, there is no amount of money that can make up for the effect talcum powder cancer has had on their lives, but numerous recent multi-million dollar verdicts against J&J offer hope that justice may prevail in their cases.
