Malaysian Consumers Association calls for Ban on Talc

Following a massive $72 million verdict in a talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuit as well as increasing media coverage and scientific studies disclosing the potentially deadly link between talc and cancer, a Malaysian consumer group has called for a recall and ban of all talc products in that country.
The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) requested in a press statement issued last week to the Malaysian Health Ministry that all talc and talcum powder products in the country be recalled and that a ban be instated to eliminate all talc products. In the statement, the CAP warns of both ovarian cancer and pulmonary cancer issues linked to talc, saying, “Talc is toxic as its particles can cause tumors in human ovaries and lungs. Talc particles are capable of moving up the reproductive system and embedding themselves in the lining of the ovary.”
In their statement, the CAP refers to multiple scientific studies which have identified talc particles in ovarian cancer tumors as proof that use of talcum powder for feminine hygiene can increase the risk of cancer. The CAP also noted that ovarian cancer is the firth leading cause of cancer amongst women in Malaysia, and that there are additional concerns about pulmonary and respiratory problems linked to use of talc, especially on infants.
In addition to requesting that the government take action to recall and ban all talc in Malaysia, the group has also cautioned consumers about the dangers of talcum powder cancer and stated that it is much safer to use cosmetic powders made from rice or cornstarch than from talc.
In the United States, an increasing number of women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after using talcum powder and families who have lost a loved one to possible talc ovarian cancer have filed personal injury lawsuits against the companies that make these products, including Johnson & Johnson. Most recently, the family of Jackie Fox, a 62-year-old woman who recently died from ovarian cancer after using talcum powder for personal hygiene for most of her life, was awarded $72 million from Johnson & Johnson by a St. Louis jury. $62 million of this award was designated as punitive damages because the jury ruled that J&J had acted in negligence and reckless disregard for consumer safety by denying the link between talcum powder in their products and cancer.
Although the Fox family’s lawsuit was recently settled, Johnson & Johnson and other talcum powder manufacturers still face more than 1,200 talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits across the United States. A number of these lawsuits have been centralized for pretrial proceedings before a single judge, and it is expected that bellwether trials scheduled for the coming months will help all parties get a better understanding of likely jury responses to evidence and testimony which will be used in other claims. Though verdicts from bellwether trials are not binding on other cases, they could often lead to agreements by defendants unwilling to proceed with many more lawsuits before juries.
