Are African American Women at a higher Risk for Talcum Powder Ovarian Cancer?

Recently, a growing number of women have filed talcum powder ovarian cancer lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson and other manufacturers of talcum powder products. Now, some are alleging that not only did J&J and others take steps to hide the known risk of talcum powder ovarian cancer, but that they played upon historical social concerns and stereotypes to specifically target African American women in their marketing campaigns—putting these women at a potentially higher risk for developing ovarian cancer.
In April, Time Magazine published an editorial by Omise’eke Natasha Tinsley, an associate professor of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Tinsley cites historical racist and misogynistic beliefs which have caused African American women to feel insecure about their body odors and to take extra pains to mask them when compared to white women. Even Thomas Jefferson associated black people with a “strong and very disagreeable odor”, she says, so these women have historically battled this stereotype with a range of vaginal douches, deodorants, and other products to mask their natural scent—including talcum powder.
Tinsley goes on to claim that Johnson & Johnson and other talcum powder manufacturers preyed upon this social stigma affecting black women by specifically marketing their talc products to help black women smell “fresh” when applied to undergarments or directly to the genital area. This despite the knowledge since at least the 1970s that talcum powder is associated with a substantially increased risk of ovarian cancer. She states:
Johnson & Johnson and other companies are ready to profit from these myths of the excessive black vagina. They’re willing to capitalize on our internalized misogynoir even if we die in the process. For decades, companies, including Johnson & Johnson, continued marketing to encourage black women to spend money on talcum powder, which could cause cancer in our reproductive organs even as they promise to “freshen” them. Because buyers were women, they were the advertisers’ targets; because they were women, they were vulnerable to side effects the companies never exposed.
In fact, Tinsley is not the only person to claim that J&J intentionally targeted black women with talcum powder advertising. After the recent award of $72 million to the family of Jacqueline Fox, a black woman who died from ovarian cancer after using talcum powder products for most of her life for genital hygiene, Bloomberg Business published an article stating that the jury in this case was shown an internal memo which proved that J&J actually ramped up marketing to target black and Hispanic women “even as the company acknowledged concerns in the health community” regarding ovarian cancer risks.
In 2015, a study conducted at George Washington University concluded that black women are twice as likely as white women to use vaginal douching products. This practice may cause or mask a number of health complications and also puts these women at a higher risk of serious illness caused by the phthalates many of these products contain. In regard to the issue of talcum powder ovarian cancer risks, this study is one of many that shows that vaginal deodorization is a cultural norm in the African American community. Given that J&J seemed concerned in the 1990s that increasing attention on the risk of talcum powder cancer may damage their profits from sales of Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower, it is now suggested that the company took advantage of this cultural belief in female deodorization by marketing their allegedly unsafe product specifically to the African American female community.
In addition to submitting evidence that J&J intentionally targeted black women with talcum powder advertising, the attorneys in the recent Fox lawsuit and others have also shown that the company also manipulated data from scientific studies submitted to the government in an attempt to prevent or reduce regulation of talc products from which they profited handsomely. Furthermore, they have continuously opted not to warn of the possible risk of talcum powder ovarian cancer on their products despite more than 20 epidemiological studies highlighting this risk.
In addition to the lawsuit filed by the family of Jacqueline Fox, J&J was recently ordered to pay another victim of talcum powder ovarian cancer, Gloria Ritesund, $55 million. The next trial in the more than 1,200 talcum powder cancer lawsuits against the company is set to begin soon. This time, the plaintiff is a 30-year-old African American woman who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2013 after using talcum powder for genital hygiene for her entire life.
